Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The real improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
