Omaha Hi/Low: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi low begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease.
