Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of one. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the negative comments from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil started playing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching period and winning was not a common thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an eternal passion for poker. He states that he is learning every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
