Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. He had access into a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
