Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming array of wagering options and because you have many individuals shooting for the high, and many trying for the low.
